Great Western Highway East – Phase 2

The Great Western Highway is one of Australia’s most historic roads and a key east-west connection out of Sydney.

The Scope

Together, the Australian and NSW Governments have committed more than $2.5 billion towards the East and West sections of the Great Western Highway Upgrade, between Katoomba and Blackheath, and between Little Hartley and Lithgow, respectively.

The project provided major economic and safety benefits. It improved the connection between Central West NSW and Sydney, reducing congestion, improving resilience and freight productivity, and providing a safer and more reliable journey for thousands of residents, commuters, tourists and freight operators who travel in, around and through the Blue Mountains.

The West section comprised 5.3km of four-lane divided highway between Katoomba and Blackheath, designed for use by High Performance Vehicles including B-Doubles over 26m in length.

Alliance was engaged to provide geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting and laboratory testing services.

The scope of services completed by Alliance included:

  • Liaising with TfNSW and other project stakeholders
  • Completing complex utility location scanning in sensitive areas
  • Conducting geotechnical drilling and test pitting investigations
  • Monitoring well installation in sensitive drinking water catchments
  • Acid sulfate soil assessments in order for the works to be issued for tender for construction purposes.
