The low strain pile integrity testing is a low-cost, non-destructive and rapid method of determining the soundness of a constructed pile. Testing involves attaching an accelerometer to the head of the pile and using a hammer to send a compression wave through the pile. The accelerometer collects the data from the reflected wave, and the resulting output can be analysed to find any potential defects in the pile.

The testing can be used to find:

• Changes in pile diameter
• Major cracks/voids in concrete
• Estimated pile length (depending on socket material)
• Consistency of concrete (e.g. concrete segregation, soil inclusions)

Low strain testing can be carried out on most cast-in-situ piles (assuming no structures have been placed over the pile head).
