Emerson Class Number

Emerson Class testing measures the tendency of the clay fraction of a soil to go into colloidal suspension in water, forming a cloud around the soil particle. Dispersive soils are those which by the nature of their minerology, and the chemistry of the water in the soil, are susceptible to separation of the individual clay particles and subsequent erosion of the very small particles through fine fissures or cracks in the soil under seepage flows.
